Is the blur permanent and irreversible?

Yes. The tool pixelates each region by downscaling it to a handful of cells and scaling it back up — permanently averaging the pixels into solid mosaic blocks at the full image resolution. The discarded sub-cell detail no longer exists in the file, so it cannot be recovered. To verify: open the downloaded file, zoom in 2000%, and try 'Unsharp Mask' or 'Smart Sharpen' — sharpening flat blocks cannot recreate detail that was averaged away.

How do I verify the blur worked?

1) Open in any image editor and zoom in — only solid averaged mosaic blocks are visible, no eyes, nose, or mouth. 2) Apply Unsharp Mask / Smart Sharpen in Photoshop or GIMP — sharpening cannot reconstruct detail that pixelation permanently averaged away. 3) Run through online forensic tools like FotoForensics — Error Level Analysis will show only uniform error in blurred regions. 4) Inspect with a hex editor — pixel bytes contain only the mosaic values, no original data.

Why does only the selected region blur, not the whole image?

Region-only blur is intentional — you choose exactly what to hide. The rest of the image is drawn directly from the original pixel data. The blurred JPEG or PNG file contains only the blurred pixels in those regions; there is no hidden 'original' layer.

Does my image get uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs inside your browser using the HTML Canvas API and a local on-device face detection model. Your image never touches any server.

Are licence plates detected automatically?

Reliable licence plate detection requires a large machine-learning model that would slow down the tool significantly. In this version, draw regions manually over any plates — the region drawing tool is quick and precise. Improved auto-detection is planned for a future update.

What image formats are supported?

JPEG, PNG, WebP, and any format your browser can display. JPEG inputs are saved as JPEG; all others (PNG, WebP, etc.) are saved as PNG to preserve quality.
